We analysed 60,505 Google reviews across 684 restoration firms in 21 US metros to find what separates the crews homeowners praise from the ones they warn about. The pattern is remarkably consistent — and it isn't price.
Check IICRC certification and state licensing, confirm they'll provide written moisture readings, get the scope in writing before work starts, and never sign over your insurance claim. Response speed matters — but documentation is what reviewers actually credit.
We looked at what homeowners actually write about, across 684 firms and 60,505 reviews. The themes that dominate aren't about equipment or price.
communication, knowledgeable staff, thoroughness, leak repair, quick response, company, polite staff, clear explanations — with communication appearing 597 times and explaining the work 391 times in the review text. Complaints cluster almost entirely around two things: the point of contact changing mid-project, and dry-outs declared finished without measurement.
In other words: the crews homeowners rate highly are the ones that explain the scope before starting, prove the drying with numbers, and keep the same person on the job. That's a much more useful hiring filter than a star rating alone, and it's the reason our rankings weight review volume rather than raw average — a 5.0 from nine reviews tells you far less than a 4.8 from nine hundred.
After major storm events, out-of-state operators arrive in force, take deposits, do partial work and leave before the rebuild. It's most acute in the storm corridors — Oklahoma, Texas and the Gulf — but it happens everywhere after a big weather event. The simplest defence is a long local review history, which is exactly what our quality gate filters for: every crew we list has an established record in its own metro.
You do not need to be an expert to use these. Asking them signals you'll be paying attention, which by itself changes how a job is run.
Every crew on this site is pulled from live Google Business data and ranked by rating weighted against review volume, so that depth of track record counts rather than a handful of perfect scores. We apply a quality gate on primary business category and minimum rating, and we do not sell placement — position one cannot be bought, and paying us cannot move anyone up or down.
That's the whole method. It isn't sophisticated, but it is honest, and it's the reason the list is worth reading.
