Why soot is a clock, not a mess

Smoke residue is chemically active. It's acidic, and on many materials it begins causing permanent change within hours to days: metals corrode and pit, plastics and vinyl yellow, marble and grout stain, and finishes on wood and appliances discolour irreversibly.

Do not dry-wipe soot

The most common and most expensive homeowner mistake. Soot particles are abrasive, and wiping grinds them into the surface, embedding staining that would otherwise have lifted. Professionals use dry chemical sponges first — a specific tool that lifts residue without smearing — and only then move to appropriate wet or solvent methods based on residue type. If you do nothing else, don't attack it with a wet cloth.

Odour is a separate job

Removing visible soot does not remove smell. Odour molecules penetrate porous materials — drywall, carpet, upholstery, timber framing — and re-emerge when humidity rises. Weeks later, on the first warm damp day, a house that looked finished smells like the fire again.

  • Source removal first. No deodorising method works while residue and burnt materials remain. This is the step people try to skip.
